Dear Sue,

I've enjoyed reading your new book and have already started implementing your exercises. I'm a 49 y.o. mom in ok shape, but I can't seem to tone certain areas. At 5ft. 2in, 110 lbs, I struggle to firm the fronts of my thighs and knees. My mother has heavy, "NO KNEES", so I guess I'm pre-disposed. Dreading shorts/skirts season…I wonder if you can suggest any exercises for me, especially the inner knees!

RC, Raleigh, NC

Hi RC and thanks for writing!
The muscle that you’re referring to is the quadriceps muscles--one of the largest muscle groups in the body. The quads run from the hip and inserts to the top of the knee.

As you pointed out, genetics does have a role on your body shape. (Thank Mom and Dad for that one.) However, you can strengthen and tone the muscle group with a few simple strength training moves that I explain in Fashionably BUFF. Lunges, wall sits and squats are great.

You should also focus on training your hamstrings as well. Toning and sculpting all of the major muscle groups in the leg will give your lower body a sleeker appearance.

Good luck!

Sue
